September Newsletter

K5 Newsletter

Hello Parents,

The children are adjusting well with their classmates and environment.  They began their special classes (Library, Spanish, P.E., Computer and Music) this past week.  They seemed to enjoy themselves.  These past couple of weeks, we have been learning our phonics songs, counting, practicing handwriting, sight word recognition of our number words and doing activities to get to know each other better.  We will begin this week working in our reading workbooks, math concepts and continue practicing our handwriting skills during our instructional time in the mornings.

Reading: I have found that some of the children do not have a complete mastery of the alphabet and their sounds.  Therefore, I am enclosing some flashcards in the Monday Mail folder for you to practice with your child at home.  I will also be teaching these skills during our reading classes, however, the reinforcement your child receives at home will be very beneficial to him or her.  We will be focusing on a letter and its sound each week until the entire alphabet has been reviewed.  Children who have mastered the entire alphabet and sounds will begin decoding three letter words and working in his/her workbooks.  You will also find attached 100 of the most used sight words.  Please make flash cards and practice these words with your child.  We will also be practicing these in class.  They do not have to sound them out.  They will know them by sight.  I will send home a list of 5 sight words each Monday for you to practice with your child.  I will check for mastery the following Monday.  This first week I am sending home a little more because we have been studying them in class and they should be a little more familiar with them. The words for the week of September 5th are one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and ten. We have also been studying the days of week.

Handwriting: The areas being taught during our Reading and Math classes will be reinforced in handwriting while practicing the correct letter and number formation. The students will also be practicing writing his/her name correctly.

Math:

Listed below are the K5 concepts/skills which will be evaluated at the end of the first 9 weeks on your child’s report card.  I will be sending home or posting on my web page some activities that you can do at home with your child to help reinforce these concepts/skills.  You can also help at home by counting with your child and working on number recognition of the numbers 1-20.

            1st Nine Weeks

Recognizes numbers 1-20

Recognizes triangle, circle, oval, square, and rectangle

Tells time to the hour

            Arranges objects according to size

Understands the difference in a plane and solid figure

Uses and identifies words for size (ie. biggest, smallest)

Uses ordinal numbers (ie. first, second, third, etc.)

Scripture Memory Verses:

We have been learning a few different verses so far in class. They are listed below. I am sending home the three verses we have been learning. However, in the future I will only send one verse to memorize each week.  The same applies as in the sight words. I will send home on Monday and will check for mastery the following Monday.  Again, we will be studying these together in class also.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Psalm 46:8 Come and see what the Lord has done.  He has done amazing things on the Earth.

Psalm 118:24 This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
