February Newsletter

Our moms are already busy working on our Valentine’s Day party.  It will be on Tuesday, February 14th from 9:00-11:00.  You are welcome to join us.  Please don’t forget to send in an empty cereal box by February 8th so Lisa can get it ready for the children to decorate. K5 Reading:

Please continue to read with your child for at least 20 minutes every night. Also, continue to work on sight words.  We are also working on word families during reading.  Your child’s reading homework is to practice in their reading books or alphabet flashcards each night.

K5 Math:

Following are some of the skills that you can practice at home with your child in preparation for our next nine week’s evaluation:

Writing numbers 1-50

Constructing a 100 chart

Recognizing pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters

Readingand making simple charts and graphs

Recognizing the number family to which a number

belongs

Thank you for helping your children with their

collection of 100 items.  They enjoyed seeing and

comparing the different things.

We are studying coins in class.  Please send in one

each of a penny, a nickel, a dime and a quarter

(with an eagle on the back) in a zip lock bag with

your child’s name on it so that each child can have

his/her own coins to work with in class.

  K5 100th Day Celebration

Thank you for sending in all of your supplies to help us to

celebrate the 100th day of school.  Following are some of

the special reading and math activities relating to 100 for

our celebration last Tuesday.

The children dressed up like he/she was 100

years old.

Wrote about what we think we will be doing when we’re

100 years old.

Read books about 100 days of school.

Work on puzzles with 100 pieces.

Using a place mat with 10 circles, we will make “100” trail

mix by placing 10 M&M’s in one circle, 10 mini

marshmallows in one circle, 10 peanuts in one circle

(and so on) until we have 10 circles of 10 different items

to equal 100.

Use a 100 grid to make a pattern with our names.

Of course, we have already and will continue to count to

100 several times.
