Kindergarten

Phonics and Reading

The kindergarten reading curriculum, Sing, Spell, Read & Write uses phonics songs, interactive charts, and games to teach the alphabetic principle, phonemic awareness, sound/letter correspondence, short vowel sounds, and blending - in a fun and meaningful way. By the end of Kindergarten students will be reading fully-decodable story books with single-, short- vowel words.

Our program also incorporates guided reading, word families, Dolch words, LIPS, Visualization and Verbalization and writing. We use the A Beka handwriting tablet which allows the children to practice formation of letters with the correct pencil grip . They begin with single letter formation then gradually advance to blends, words and sentences. This also provides recognition of sentences by capital letters and periods. The children also begin to apply these skills in morning journal entries and creative writing assignments.

Bible

The A Beka Bible curriculum consists of memory verses, Bible doctrine and lessons such as Salvation Series, Genesis, and Life of Christ. In addition, we also have a school-wide area of study. This year it is Fruit of the Spirit.

Science

The science curriculum consists of calendar studies, days of the week, months of the year, units of weather, seasons, five senses, animals, and butterflies. These topics are introduced through discussions, Weekly Readers, reading materials, and experimentation. On campus field trips and hands on projects are used to reinforce these areas of study.

Social Studies

The social studies curriculum consists of calendar studies, fire prevention and safety, community helpers, pilgrims, Indians, significant Presidents and historical people, important symbols of our country and map studies. On campus field trips and hands-on projects are used to reinforce these areas of study. Weekly Readers also enhance learning in these areas. Kindergartners also studied North America as a school-wide continent study.
