Physical Education Curriculum

In physical education, students acquire the knowledge and skills for movement that provide the foundation for enjoyment, continued social development through physical activity, and appreciation for lifetime fitness. Primary students learn fundamental movement skills and develop gross and fine motor skills. Students learn rules and procedures for simple games and apply safety practices associated with physical activities.

In each activity, students engage in developing basic levels of strength, endurance, and flexabilty. In addition, they learn space awareness. Fourth-grade students work on combining the manipulative skills and basic concepts taught into more advanced activities. These activities and games focus on success and learning for all students, rather than just winning. Students continue to learn etiquette of participation and skills to resolve conflicts during games and sports in acceptable ways.

The philosophy behind a strong physical education program is to teach lifelong fitness skills that they can apply to their daily lives. The physical education program also develops self-confidence and positive self-esteem through successful physical activity. Students are taught through competitive team activities to demonstrate cooperation, good sportsmenship and safety.
