FIFTH GRADE SUPER STARS!! It is hard to imagine the school year is almost over! My how time flies when you're having fun! Reading: Students are completing activities from the Weekly Reader and newspaper and are working from the SRA kit. Accelerated Reader: Students should be striving to reach their AR goals and requirements for the 4th quarter! The last day to take AR tests is Friday, May 18th. Students are expected to earn a minimum of 20 AR points each quarter. Test scores need to be 70% or higher to count toward their requirements. Students are to read a minimum of (2) fictions, (1) biography, and (1) nonfiction (that is not a biography) each quarter. Students should be working on their AR requirements. The library or computer lab will be open each morning from 7:30-8:00 for students to take AR tests. Vocabulary: Sadiler-Oxford Vocabulary Workshop (blue) - Units will be assigned on Wednesday with tests administered the following Wednesday. For extra credit, students are encouraged to make vocabulary note cards with the vocabulary word, definition, synonyms, and antonyms written on them. Note cards should be turned in to the teacher no later than one day prior to the test date. Students may also go to the website listed on the back of their vocabulary book and play games for extra credit. SRA Kit 2c: This is a reading laboratory that allows students to work independently at their own reading levels. Levels are determined from a diagnostic test given at the beginning of the year. Students' levels may change if the material becomes too easy or too frustrating. Barnell-Loft Skill Builders: Students work from this kit on the following skills: Main Idea, Drawing Conclusions, Sequencing, Inferencing, Working Within Words, Following Directions, Using Context Clues, Locating Answers, and Finding Facts. Weekly Reader: Students will complete a Weekly Reader each week. The grade they receive will be used for both reading and social studies. This weekly publication will be completed in class so discussion can take place. Language Arts: Houghton Mifflin English 5 This is a new textbook with a more inviting, colorful text. Occasionally, students will be assgined workbook pages to complete for homework. Check agenda book and web page for assignments. Spelling: Harcourt Brace Students will assigned weekly units. Workbook pages are due on Thursday and the unit test will be administered on Friday. If school is not in session on Friday, the test will be administered on Monday. For the remainder of the year students will be engaging in classroom spelling bee competitions. |
