Welcome to Art!

We have an exciting program at HVCS.  It is our goal to open a child's creativity through their imagination.  We desire to use art as a positive avenue for self expression, to build confidence, self esteem, and to instill an appreciation of art in the world around us.  We will learn elements and principals of art, graphic design, art through the ages, and hands on skills.  We will incorporate concepts of math, science, social studies, and literature.  As with other subjects at HVCS, we are here to inspire the whole child and to glorify God in everything we do.

Art projects will be divided up into 3 week sections.  The first day will be talking about the artist and their technique.  The next 2 days of class will allow them to work on the project and to complete it.   At the end of every 9 week grading period there will be a vocabulary/multiple choice quiz given. This will consist of 10 questions plus a bonus.  This will be our review of terms that were used in class and about the artist that we talked about. I will send home a hard copy of the vocabulary near the end of the 9 weeks.  This should be very easy.  We review every class period.

We have completed our "Masks of India" projects.  Stop by the cork board on the balcony and see all of the unique designs.  Our next project will be studying complementary colors.  We will be making some graphic designs using our rulers and compasses.  This lesson will also include a review of Primary, Secondary, and Monochromatic colors.

Examples of complementary colors are shown in the illustration below.  They are colors that are opposite on the color wheel.

Vocabulary words will be listed soon, also a copy will be coming home with your children.  Watch for these in their backpacks.

Complementary color scheme
Colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel are considered to be complementary colors (example: red and green).

The high contrast of complementary colors creates a vibrant look especially when used at full saturation. This color scheme must be managed well so it is not jarring.

Complementary color schemes are tricky to use in large doses, but work well when you want something to stand out.
