The overriding goal of music education is to instill in each child a lifelong love and appreciation for music. Elementary music education provides the opportunity for students to develop an appreciation and a love of music and an understanding of the basic elements of music through participation in a variety of activities and skill areas, to understand the role of music in history and different cultures, and to use music as a vehicle for creative self-expression and aesthetic development.

What's Playing

Our 5th graders have been learning about form in music while listening to and playing rhythms to one of Scott Joplin's ragtime compositions, "Fig Leaf Rag".  The students first had to listen to the music to determine when the melody changed and indicate the change by holding up a card labeled either A, B or C.  By doing this, they discovered which sections of the composition were repeated.  The students were then divided into 3 groups, each representing one section of the composition, and given rhythm instruments with which to play the rhythm written on the board for their section.  This activity incorporated learning about meter, quarter notes and rests, half notes, whole notes and rests, bar lines and double bar lines.  We will continue our study by determining the form of another of Joplin's compositions, learning a little about the composer, and learning more about ragtime music.  Mrs. Veys even joined us in playing one of the rhythms!!
